March 30-April 1
We had planned to go to the Grand Canyon over spring break awhile ago. We were able to get a room in the park! Since I am NOT a camper that sounded great! We left Thursday morning and headed down 8...it was the road that Bill took when he came across country. He knew it was a little curvy..but thought it was more scenic and therefore worth it. Well, we forgot a little detail.....Landon has a tendency to get car sick. Well, it didn't take too long.....he was sick the ENTIRE way. We would have to pull over and then proceed to get going again only to have to pull over again. A long drive anyway...just got a whole lot longer! We FINALLY got there around 6:30-7ish....we got checked in, I was waiting for a place at the restaurant...all was well.
We get seated at the restaurant and order our food and suddenly the power goes out. Ha ha...funny story....I am waiting for the generator....THAT DOES NOT EXSIST! The waitress comes to us and tells us they can not cook our food. So the child that has been getting sick all day gets potato chips for dinner. That is what she could offer us. No kidding. I am NOT a happy mommy...if I wanted to go camping I would have booked a camp site....I did not do such a thing....I booked a hotel! As we sat there waiting for the power to turn on...it start to SNOW. We had checked the forecast and the high was 70 with a low being 39. Now it was snowing and there was no heat. Perfect! After eating our chips and luckily I had snacks and sandwiches from earlier in the day.....we found our way to the room. We asked for extra blankets and snuggled in. How do your run a hotel and NOT have a back-up generator? I was already worried about the morning and having to drive a half hour or more just to get breakfast.....ok coffee. Luckily, the power came back on about 2am...so did every light in our room. I could sleep a little better knowing that coffee would come quickly in the morning!
We awoke in the Grand Canyon...covered in SNOW...a whole bunch of it! I wore the worst possible shoes but had luckily remembered some hats and gloves. It was COLD...especially since we are wimps from Southern California. We had breakfast and got going. We took the bus to the Kaibab trail. It was about 1.5 miles down to a good stopping point and 4 more miles to the river. We decided to go the 1.5 miles...what I didn't know at the time was it was a 2000 ft drop....therefore climb on the way back up! The trails were icy to begin with...we were slipping and sliding grabbing on to rocks and everything. Once we got a little further down it seemed to get better. We walked all the way down to the little area and had some snacks, a rest and took some pictures. By this time we had heated up quite a bit and could shed some layers. Yeah, we ended up wearing almost everything we had packed! We started our climb. Landon was like a little mountain goat...Bill had to make him stop and have some water. Addison was a super star too. The Grand Canyon was indeed majestic. It makes you feel really minute in the whole scheme of things. By about noon we had made it back up to where the bus dropped us off. We were all warmed up and hungry. We went to one of the lodges and ate. It was still snowing. It snowed on and off the rest of the day. Sometimes it would clear up and the in a minute it would be so foggy that you couldn't see anything! Strange weather. We also did another hike to get a good sunset picture. This was a flat trail but super muddy. The kids were amazing. We had a great time....and have a story to go with it! Thanks to science we had a much better ride back! I think I may need to buy stock in Dramamine. I did think it was supposed to put you to sleep. It has the opposite affect on Landon. I bet I heard "Hey Mom" a hundred times and that is NO exaggeration. Bill and I just started laughing about it! We made it home safe and sound. The Nesbitt trip to the Grand Canyon was a success + a good story!
